Bodyspace: Anthropometry, Ergonomics and the Design of the Work, Second Edition

Bodyspace has been acclaimed since its original incarnation, and has been completely revised and updated for this second edition. It is a recommended primary text on teaching courses the world over. We can tall think of examples of tools we find difficult to use, places we cannot reach, seats designed for someone else, products not fit for their purpose. In Bodyspace, the author argues that this is because designers commonly fail to understand the needs of users of their products, and explains that the solution is for designers to design ergonomically. Profusely illustrated and employing tables of human dimensions (anthropometric data) Bodyspace provides the means to execute successful ergonomic design of benefit to all-manufacturer, designer, and user alike.

This edition has been revised to bring fresh insights into the principles and practice of anthropometrics, workspace design, sitting and seating, hands and handles, ergonomics in the office, ergonomics in the home, and health and safety work. The tables of anthropometric data presented within focus on human diversity, ethnic differences, growth and development, secular trends, social class and occupation, and ageing.

Found some scans of prints I had shot a long time ago. This was my first attempt at a pro style 2 light home studio shot.

I had just done a series of test shots at incremental f-stops with my daughter holding up a piece of paper with the f-stop written on it (I didn't have a manual light meter or a TTL light meter) and I had 3 frames left on the roll.

My kids are on two kitchen chairs put side by side, the backdrop is a flannel bedsheet sleeved onto a dowel hanging from a second hand projector screen stand. I took a wild guess at f8 for the flash sync speed of 1/90s on off-label Fuji 100 and got this favourite.

We were living on an old (1919) converted tugboat at the time, so this was shot in the galley (9.5ft wide less sink counter on one side). All of my equipment was hand-me-down vintage stuff from my father in law except for a small Minolta 20 hotshoe flash on a new hotshoe slave switch attached to a second hand broken tripod that I repaired. Key light was a tripod mounted Metz 45CT bounced off a 4X4ft second hand projector screen (later on I switched to bouncing it with a small white child's umbrella attached to the Metz with a home brew gizmo of two eye-bolts, two wing nuts and a piece of coat hanger wire) with fill from the Minolta 20. Camera was a hand held Minolta EX-5 with standard 50mm lens.

This shot started about 3 years of mobile studio work for my wife and I - truly an adventure into the unknown for us. My father had his doubts about our chances of success - he thought I should take some photography courses (my previous photography experience was less than a dozen rolls of film through point and shoot cameras). About 2 years later, I entered this photo in a contest at the local Camera Club that I joined and scored 24/30... they said "Nobody is ever given 25+/30." Three cheers for self-taught photographers!!!

Caden was less than 6 mos old (he couldn't even sit up yet - hence the old 7-Up crate) and Shanise is 19 mos older than Caden.

A fire in the kitchen broke out the afternoon of July 1, 1898 and quickly spread through the frame structure of the Hotel. The photo, taken from across the railroad tracks, shows a lawn filled with spectators and littered with materials salvaged from the burning building while smoke pours out of every available crevice.

The November 30, 1936 Roanoke Times recalls:

As the blaze soared and it was evident that the fire department was unable to control it, hundreds of men rushed in from the Roanoke Machine Works and assisted in saving much of the furniture and carpets and destroying thousands of dollars worth of hotel equipment in their efforts to save something from the flames. Beds, dressers, mattresses and other furniture, including bowls and pitchers with which many of the rooms were equipped, were hurled from the second and third floor windows, while carpets were wrenched from the floors and piled out in the greatest confusion. Willing hands on the outside were ready to drag the furnishings to vantage points on the lawn to the south and west of the blazing building, all of which was practically destroyed with the exception of the east wing. The roof of the west wing was burned and the interior was gutted. The lobby and office were disfigured by flames, but the construction was held intact.

It was feared that the entire hotel would have to be rebuilt, however it was only shut down for a few months and by the end of September, guests slowly began returning. A double wedding was held in October officially declaring the Hotel Roanoke was again open for business.

2 Third Hand Bases For Soldering Jewelry. This is a new set of 2 third hand bases with magnifiers. They can be used as a practical helper for soldering jewelry, electronics and model making. Each features adjustable joints for versatile movement in all directions. Both include a 2 1/2" (62 mm) 3X magnifying glass. These have a heavy cast iron base for added stability.
